April 2024 Reads

Willy Wonka for adults. This is what this book reminded me of. It was such a touching book, and I devoured it. I loved all the characters, and they were all so real. The experience was amazing, and it made me cry, a lot. I picked this from Book of the Month as my free Book of the Year finalist. I definitely see why so many people voted for it to be Book of the Year!

One of my favorite series, I’m so happy I put myself on hold right away because I was able to get the book on release day! This book didn’t disappoint. It had the same humor and mishaps as the other three books. I loved that we wrapped up some mysteries, and we added new ones. I hope when the series is over, our girl Finlay comes out on top.

Yes, I read David Copperfield last year, but when I discovered there was this brand new dramatized version with Ncuti Gatwa as Copperfield, I couldn’t resist. If you have ever wanted to read Copperfield but you were intimidated by the length, this is for you. Condensed down to eight hours, most of the book is intact, and this production is beautifully acted. I highly recommend!

April is the month of reading new entries of my beloved series. The Beloved was probably one of my most highly anticipated releases this year. The follow up after the major cliffhanger in last year’s Lassiter, The Beloved is set in the future, and follows Zsadist and his daughter, and it was beautiful. It was everything I had hoped it would be and more. And Ward has perfectly set up the next several books in the series. She never lets me down.

I saw this book at my kids’ book fair and fell in love with the cover, so I nabbed it. It was a cute YA Rom Com. I liked the premise and felt the characters were well rounded, plus there were lots of adorable animals. It was a nice quick read.

My book club celebrates Agatha April every year, and this was our first Miss Marple mystery, and I have to say, I was a little let down. Miss Marple was barely in it, and the mystery itself was kind of meh. Definitely not our favorite of the Christie novels we have read since starting Agatha April a few years ago.

For one of my yearly reading challenges I needed to read a book that has been turned into a musical, so I chose Matilda! I loved the book. It was magical and funny, and I will say, the musical adaptation was very faithful to the book. I found myself singing the songs as I was reading the book. I think this is my favorite Dahl book I’ve read so far.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Another highly anticipated release, I ignored my husband so I could spend all night reading this book. I immediately fell in love with Miles. He’s probably my favorite of Henry’s heroes so far. I’m pretty sure this is my favorite Henry book. Don’t be surprised if later this year you see this book pop back up on a monthly recap of my reads.

June 2023 Reads

I highly recommend reading David Copperfield first. It adds a whole new layer to this book, which is a beautiful heartwrenching story that hit all the same beats as Copperfield, but just transferred to a modern setting. I loved Demon and Angus, and rooted for Demon to get out of his situation. The characters were great, the prose was beautiful. This was not a bok to rush through, it needed to be savored.

Emily Henry is always a win. I loved the format of this book. I loved that we got to see the relationship in chornological order, simultaneously with the current time. I’m a sucker for the “there’s only one bed” trope, and this one was no different. Like all Emily Henry books, I found myself loving the side characters just as much as the mains. I wouldn’t say no to a book of short stories following up on all of Henry’s side characters post their books. This was a beautiful story and a wonderful romance. Couldn’t put it down.

Second book in the Wolven series, Forever deals with Daniel’s cancer and what Lydia is going to do when he dies. I trust JR Ward inherently to give me a happy ending, so I’m going to continue to trust her. But man, these book was pretty bleak. It made me cry, a lot. And I now ship Lydia with both Daniel and Blade, and I don’t know what to do with that. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This book was okay, and I was a little let down since I was really looking forward to it. I didn’t really like the way it was written, the prose. And the plot felt pretty rote for the first section. There was a twist in the second part which peaked my interest. But it wasn’t enough to “wow” me. I liked how all the different POV characters stories tied in together, but there really was only one story I really wanted to read, and there really wasn’t enough of it, I think his was represented the least.

Really cute story!! I love Nick and Charlie. Everything about their story was so organic and fluffy and I could not put it down. Made me want to read the whole series.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I don’t know why it took me so long to read this one! It’s so good. the commentary on being trans, deportation, and community were all really good. The love story? Epic! The plot?? Amazing. I couldn’t stop reading. It was intriguing, suspenseful, and honestly caught me off guard. Loved it.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Charlie and Nick are completely adorable. I didn’t think they could get any cuter. But they did. Again, the story just feels so authentic.

Paris! We’re taking the story on the road and getting to the friend group better. I love all of the characters! They are all amazing and I love them all. These characters are great!

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Cried so much in this one, but everything covered felt so authentic. I really appreciate the care with which the subject matter is being handled. Can’t wait for more.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Cute premise, and lovely romance. I loved everything about it. The characters were great, the chemistry was on point. I loved that there really wasn’t a third act break-up. All tears shed were happy tears or shed over things not between the couple. Now I want to read the first book in the series.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Leon and Tiffy are both great characters who combined into the sweetest romance. The book was so cute. The romance was sweet, the third act breakup was minimal. Loved everything about the book.

I had been really looking forward to reading this book, and it didn’t disappoint. Elliot Page really made clear everything he felt pre-transition and post-transition. He talked about the dysphoria he felt, the pain he felt being in all the closets he was forced into. I’m so happy he felt comfortable enough to open up, since he’s one of the most visible transgender actors around. I was happy when he shared stories of all the people who are supportive of him, both biological and found family. It was important to me to know he had people in his life who were there for him.

July 2022 Reads

Loving the show, I decided to give the comics a shot. Loved this first volume. Feel like I really need to read more since this was just establishing Kamala and the characters.

4 Stars

Emily Henry knows how to write a romance. This book was so good. Even almost a month later, I’m still thinking about this book. When Nora and Charlie bantered, I couldn’t keep a smile off my face. Their attraction was palpable and leapt off the page. The ending defied tropes and made me giddy. Everything about this book was perfection.

5 Stars

Touching memoir about a daughter and her grief over losing her mother to cancer. The story of her and her mother’s relationship was touching. I loved when she began talking about learning traditional Korean food as a way to feel closer to her mother after she died.

5 Stars

Was the tiger real? Were the stories real? These are questions I walked away from this book with. The book was heartbreakingly beautiful. The hope Lily had when trying to fix her grandma, the heartbreaking moment when everyone realizes there is nothing to be done, and the hope at the end with continuing with traditions all made this book remarkable.

4 Stars

Fun story about men who read romances to try and fix their relationships. It was funny and sexy and I rooted for Gavin and Thea the whole book.

4 Stars

Fun fake dating romance. Hilarious dialogue and the characters were great. Loved everyone in this book especially the side characters. Felt everyone got what they wanted in the end without having to compromise their character. Laughed out loud several times. (BOTM)

This book was so good. Daunis was such a great character. I loved her growth throughout the book. Her love for her community was astounding and really drove the plot. Her relationships felt organic. Very much felt the thriller vibe throughout. I was kind of hoping for a better, less realistic ending, but I still liked the one I got. (BOTM)

5 Stars

The book was pretty standard Rear Window trop for about 70% of the book, which made it feel tired and cliche. However, after the “twist” the last 30% of the book was edge of your seat. Overall the book was good, but nothing too memorable.

4 Stars

Okay, after a second volume, this book is really fun. I’m really enjoying the comics, even though they are completely different from the show. I really like Kamala and I like discovering her powers and her limitations. I’m really looking forward to reading the next volume.

July 2021 Reads

Northern Spy is billed as a thriller, but that wasn’t the book I read. I went in expecting a spy thriller set in Northern Ireland. What I got was a story about a woman experiencing motherhood for the first time, and maybe a little about being a spy.

The setting was also suspect. I had to actually Google the IRA and whether it was still active today, it isn’t. All around the book was a bit of a disappointment, even though it was well written.

Project Hail Mary was one of my most anticipated releases of this year, and it really didn’t disappoint, it actually exceeded my expectations. Science Fiction, emphasis on the science, Hail Mary tells the story of Grace, a scientist sent to the edges of our universe to try and solve the problem of our dying sun.

Full of twists and turns and edge of your seat action, this book diverges from Weir’s The Martian by bringing in a surprising ally to Grace, and turning the story into one of not only survival but to one of unlikely friendship and hope.

This book is easily my favorite book I’ve read so far this year. (BOTM)

5 Stars

Well Met was such a fun romance set in a small New England town and their annual Renaissance festival. Simon and Emily’s enemies to lovers story was absolutely fantastic, and I loved every second of their banter.

I enjoyed this book so much that I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series. And I also really want to go to Faire. (BOTM)

The Lost Apothecary is probably the book I was most disappointed with this month. Billed as Historical Fantasy, I just didn’t see any sort of fantasy elements, at least not until the very end, and even that was a stretch. The inside flap also implied time travel, but again, there was none of that.

The dual storylines were okay, but they were so loosely tied together I often wondered what the point was.

Overall, the book left a lot to be desired and was nothing what I expected it to be. (BOTM)

This. Book. The timeline through Alex and Poppy’s relationship was an absolutely stunning way to tell their story. Their friendship was beautifully told, and the slow realization of Poppy’s feelings for Alex was so realistic.

This is a book that I will definitely be keeping on my shelf in order to re-read. (BOTM)

Sometimes when you go into a book with low expectations, you’re pleasantly surprised. I loved Daniel. He was hilarious and very relatable as a person. The story flowed perfectly from beginning to end. And it even got suspenseful near the end, which was something I really wasn’t expecting! Overall if you want a fun Rear Window type book, this is the book for your. (BOTM)

I highly recommend listening to Born a Crime on audiobook. Listening to Trevor Noah tell his own story is compelling and powerful. And I think it helps inject humor into the story, with his voices and inflections. I learned more about Apartheid from this book than I ever did in school.

5 Stars

I think I went into One Last Stop with high expectations since Red, White, and Royal Blue was one of my favorite books I read last year, so I was let down just a little. I still really enjoyed the book, but I didn’t immediately go to Pinterest and start pinning fan art of it either.

I really enjoyed the concept of the book, and I LOVED August and Jane, their chemistry was undeniable, and they were so cute together. I also loved the theme of found family.

I can’t put my finger on what fell short with me preventing me from giving this book five stars, but I really loved this book, just not as much as I had hoped I would. (BOTM)

4 Stars

I chose this book because I needed a debut to finish off my Book of the Month challenge and earn my free socks. We Are the Brennans was a huge surprise. I LOVED this book. It reminded me of Parenthood, one of my favorite tv shows.

The characters were all flawed, but that just made them more endearing. I loved this book so much I’m really hoping Lange will write more books about this family. (BOTM)

Brave New World was my book club’s pick for July. This was my third time reading it, and I have to say I still loved it the third time around. The commentary about consumerism and society is still spot on nearly ninety years after its publication. While the characters are not super strong and just a means for pushing the plot forward, Mustapha Mond and John still have one of the most iconic pieces of literature I’ve ever read. If you haven’t read this classic, you should.

4 Stars

I think I was expecting a little more thriller in The Maidens so I was a little let down, but the book still pushed me through and I couldn’t put it down. Starting out a bit slow, once Marianna really started investigating the mystery, the action picked up and I really didn’t want to stop reading. The ending really made up for the slow beginning. (BOTM)

A fun summer Rom Com set in a beautiful setting, Shipped was the light reading I needed after a month of heavy books. Graeme and Henley were a match made in Rom Com heaven, and their enemies to lovers relationship was to die for. Not only did this book have a wonderful love story, I really enjoyed the focus it had on ecotourism and the plight of women working in a male dominated industry.
